UEFA has calmed tempers in the Basque city with a programme to compensate for the loss of the Eurocup venue. Thus, after the organisation took the decision to take the championship matches to La Cartuja in Seville, it has decided to compensate Bilbao and San Mamés with 1.3 million euros and the celebration of two finals in the coming years: the Europa League in 2024 and the women's Champions League in 2025.
For the mayor of Bilbao, these measures are a way of "compensating" the city for the losses caused by the change of venue. "We said we were going to defend the interests of the Bilbao venue and we said so from the very moment UEFA unilaterally decided to break the contract", he recalled.
